New Delhi: Top leaders of the opposition INDIA bloc met on Wednesday to chalk out a joint response to the ongoing controversy surrounding the Election Commission and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Following the meeting, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge announced that opposition MPs will hold a joint march to the Election Commission of India on October 6. The bloc has also announced a series of “Save Democracy” programmes, including a major rally in New Delhi on November 1.
Kharge accused the Election Commission of functioning under the influence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. These are Kharge’s political allegations; the Election Commission and the BJP have disputed the opposition’s characterisation of its functioning.
The INDIA bloc’s action plan comes amid an escalating dispute over electoral-roll revisions and reported differences within the Election Commission over aspects of the SIR process.
