Kota: A woman from Guwahati reached her son’s hostel in Kota on Wednesday noon, so that she could be with him to lend emotional support when he appeared for JEE-Main a couple of days later. The sight that greeted her there instead shattered her life.
Barely an hour before her arrival, her only son had tragically ended his life. The mother found herself standing outside the broken door of his room, surrounded by a heart wrenching silence. Cops who were present at the spot said when she realised what had happened, she collapsed in a state of shock.
It was only after about three hours that she managed to gather the strength to request the police to contact her brother-in-law in Delhi.
The plastic bag of guavas she had lovingly bought for her 17-year-old boy lay forgotten beside his belongings on Thursday. The circle inspector of Jawahar Nagar police station, Ram Laxman Gurjar, said the Assam teen, who had been living in the hostel for two years diligently preparing for the engineering entrance exam, took the extreme step as he apparently felt overwhelmed by studies.
Just two hours earlier, a 24-year-old aspiring doctor, too, had ended her life in her PG room, succumbing to the same overpowering feeling of dejection.
Ashfa Shekh’s disconsolate mother, who arrived with other family members from Ahmedabad, could still not believe that her daughter, who derided the idea of suicide, could take such a step.Ashfa’s family claimed she was a good student and had consistently excelled in her studies.
However, a disappointing score in a recent test perhaps caused her immense stress, which she eventually could not deal with.Recalling their conversation, Ashfa’s mother on Thursday said her daughter believed the students who could not handle academic pressure had the option to quit, instead of taking their lives. The families of both the deceased students opted against autopsy, and the authorities released the bodies after completing necessary legal requirements.
