Former Jharkhand CM Shibu Soren dies at 81

JMM supremo and former Jharkhand Chief Minister Shibu Soren has passed away at the age of 81, his son Hemant Soren announced on Monday.

“Respected Dishom Guruji has left us all. I feel a deep sense of emptiness today,” Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren said in a post on X.

Soren was on ventilator support and had been undergoing treatment at Delhi’s Sir Ganga Ram Hospital for over a month. He was hospitalised in the last week of June due to a kidney-related ailment.

The 81-year-old had been receiving regular treatment at the hospital for an extended period. He led the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) for 38 years and was also regarded as the party’s founding patron.

Born on January 11, 1944, in Nemra village of Ramgarh district in Jharkhand (then Bihar), Soren played a pivotal role in the creation of Jharkhand, founded the JMM, and emerged as a key figure in national politics.
