Doda Police Apprehend ATM Fraud Accused; Cash Worth ₹49,000 Recovered

Doda, January 20, 2026: Doda Police have successfully apprehended an accused involved in ATM fraud cases and recovered cash amounting to ₹49,000/-.

On January 19, 2026, a written complaint was lodged at Police Station Thathri by Shafkat Hussain, who reported that while attempting to withdraw money from the J&K Bank ATM at Thathri, an unknown individual fraudulently exchanged his ATM card, leading to the unauthorized withdrawal of ₹45,000/- from his bank account.

During the course of investigation, another victim namely Hazoor Din also reported a similar incident, in which ₹14,000/- was fraudulently withdrawn from his account using the same modus operandi.

Accordingly, a case FIR No. 07/2026 was registered at Police Station Thathri and a focused investigation was initiated under the overall supervision of SSP Doda, Shri Sandeep Mehta, JKPS.

Acting swiftly on credible leads, a police team apprehended the accused, identified as Mudassir Ahmad Ganaie, at Zero Point Jangwalwar. During personal search, an amount of ₹49,000/- was recovered from his possession. Further investigation in the case is in progress.

In recent times, there has been a noticeable rise in ATM and banking-related frauds across the region, with fraudsters targeting unsuspecting customers by distracting them inside or near ATM kiosks and exchanging ATM cards under false pretences. To curb such incidents, police have intensified surveillance around ATM points, enhanced patrolling, and initiated awareness drives to educate the public about safe banking practices. Banks have also been advised to ensure proper functioning of CCTV cameras and display precautionary guidelines at ATM kiosks.

Doda Police have once again appealed to the general public not to share ATM cards, PINs, or any other banking details with unknown persons and to immediately report any suspicious activity to the nearest police station.
