DC Poonch Ashok Kumar Sharma Releases Pigeons at ‘Nasha Mukt Khel Mela’, Reaffirms Commitment to Drug-Free Society

Poonch February 12, 2026: Reaffirming its commitment to building a drug-free society, the Department of Social Welfare Poonch organised a vibrant “Nasha Mukt Khel Mela” at Government Higher Secondary School, Chandak, under the aegis of the nationwide Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan.

The programme commenced with the National Anthem, fostering a spirit of unity and patriotism among participants and attendees. A pledge for a Nasha Mukt (drug-free) society was also administered, with students, athletes and officials collectively resolving to combat substance abuse and promote a healthy and responsible lifestyle.

The event was formally inaugurated by the Deputy Commissioner Poonch, Sh. Ashok Kumar Sharma (JKAS), who symbolically released white pigeons into the air as a gesture of peace, hope and collective determination to eradicate drug abuse from society. Addressing the gathering, the Deputy Commissioner described sports as a powerful antidote to social evils and stressed the need to channel the energy of youth into constructive and productive pursuits. He urged young participants to embrace the message, “Say Yes to Life, No to Drugs,” and become ambassadors of change within their communities.

More than 150 athletes actively participated in various competitions including Volleyball, Kabaddi, Shot Put and Tug of War. The event witnessed enthusiastic participation and healthy competition, drawing a large gathering of locals from Chandak and adjoining areas who cheered the participants.

District Social Welfare Officer Poonch, Khalil A. Banday (JKAS), welcomed the dignitaries and highlighted the department’s sustained initiatives aimed at engaging youth in meaningful activities to counter the growing menace of drug abuse.

Among those present on the occasion were the Chief Education Officer Poonch, Executive Engineer PDD, District Youth Services & Sports Officer (DYSSO), Tehsildar Haveli, District Information Officer Poonch, Principal GHSS Chandak, senior police officers and other civil and administrative officers.

Senior Lecturer Nazarat Fareed Khan conducted the proceedings of the programme. The staff of the Social Welfare Department and Youth Services & Sports Department coordinated the event efficiently, ensuring its smooth conduct.

The programme concluded with a prize distribution ceremony where the Additional Deputy Commissioner, Sh. Tahir Mustafa Malik (JKAS), was the Chief Guest. He distributed trophies among the winning teams, handed over certificates to referees, and presented prizes and certificates to participants as a mark of encouragement.

Both the Deputy Commissioner and the Additional Deputy Commissioner appreciated the Social Welfare Department for organising an impactful mela dedicated to promoting a healthy, active and drug-free society. Refreshments were served at the end, making the event a grand success.
