The ruling Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (NC) is facing growing internal dissent, with 24 party MLAs reportedly joining hands to demand major changes in the government and greater accountability within the organisation. The developments come just days after Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expanded his Cabinet by inducting four new ministers.
According to reports, at least 18 National Conference legislators attended a closed-door meeting at the residence of Lolab MLA Qaisar Jamsheed Lone in Srinagar on October 30, while six other MLAs reportedly joined through video conference, taking the total number of legislators backing the demands to 24.
The legislators have reportedly expressed dissatisfaction over the recent Cabinet reshuffle, alleging a lack of consultation and transparency in decisions related to ministerial appointments. They have also called for greater participation of elected representatives in government decision-making and stronger internal democracy within the party.
Among their key demands is the removal of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah’s advisor, Nasir Aslam Wani, and Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary. The group has also sought the removal of ministers who have completed two years in office and a comprehensive restructuring of the Council of Ministers.
The legislators are additionally seeking a time-bound roadmap for implementing the National Conference’s 2024 Assembly election manifesto, along with renewed efforts towards the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood and special status under Article 370.
The discontent reportedly reflects frustration among several senior legislators who feel sidelined in important government decisions despite their electoral contributions and experience. Some party leaders have also raised concerns over the functioning of the administration and the influence of non-elected individuals in key decision-making positions.
Meanwhile, National Conference president Farooq Abdullah has reportedly removed Mubarak Gul from the post of party general secretary, following the recent developments. Gul was among the legislators who attended the meeting.
The National Conference leadership, however, has played down suggestions of a major rebellion within the party. Party leaders have indicated that legislators are entitled to raise their grievances and that internal discussions should not be interpreted as an attempt to weaken the organisation.
The National Conference currently has 41 MLAs in the 90-member Jammu and Kashmir Assembly and formed the government with support from Congress, smaller parties and Independents. The latest developments have brought renewed attention to internal differences within the ruling party and the political challenges facing Omar Abdullah’s government.
