J&K Politicians Oppose Waqf Bill, Call It “Conspiracy Against Muslims”
Srinagar, April 3: Political leaders in Jammu and Kashmir have strongly opposed the proposed amendments to the Waqf Act, calling it an attempt to target Muslims and interfere with their religious affairs.
Peoples Conference chairman and Handwara MLA, Sajad Lone, criticized the amendment, calling it a “right-wing trespass.” In a post on X, he wrote, “Waqf by definition is the custodian of properties collectively owned by Muslims. It is an Islamic concept. The proposed amendment by Parliament is a blatant interference in our faith aimed at divesting rightful custodians of their authority.”
Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti also lashed out at the proposed changes, alleging a deliberate targeting of Muslims. “I don’t have any expectations from the BJP government. For the past few years, Muslims have been lynched, mosques destroyed, and graveyards seized,” she said while speaking to reporters.
PDP leader Waheed Ur Rehman Para compared the Bill to the J&K Reorganisation Act, arguing that it prioritizes government control over community rights. “Just like the J&K Reorganisation Act, 2019, which reorganized the state into union territories, the Waqf Bill seeks to centralize authority over community properties,” he stated.
The proposed amendments to the Waqf Act have sparked controversy, with political leaders in J&K viewing it as an infringement on religious and community rights.
