Congress to Launch ‘Save the Constitution’ Campaign from April 22, Pushes for J&K Statehood Restoration

The Jammu and Kashmir Congress is set to kick off a robust and extended ‘Samvidhan Bachao’ (Save the Constitution) campaign starting April 22, with a central focus on the restoration of J&K’s statehood. The campaign will run for nearly one and a half months.

The party plans to ramp up the movement across all districts and assembly segments, aiming to expose what it calls the “diversionary tactics” of the BJP government. The Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) president, Tariq Hameed Karra, has charted out a detailed roadmap following directives from the All India Congress Committee (AICC).

A strategy meeting of senior Congress leaders was held at the party’s headquarters to finalise preparations for a larger gathering on April 22, involving district and block-level leaders. The campaign will include a province-level protest rally in Jammu on April 29, protesting what Congress calls the Modi government’s “assault on the Constitution.”

According to the party, this campaign will also serve to raise awareness among the public about the government’s alleged failures in tackling unemployment, inflation, and excessive taxation.

During the internal meeting, Congress leaders also reviewed recent weather-related calamities such as cloudbursts and strong winds and urged the administration to provide compensation to the affected families.

Meanwhile, Congress leader Syed Naseer Hussain expressed concern over the ongoing delay in restoring J&K’s statehood. He reiterated that the Congress has consistently supported the demand and would continue to push for it.

“The government must answer why the delay continues. We’ve protested earlier and will persist until statehood is restored,” Hussain said. He also revealed that Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge will write to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to press the demand for restoring Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood.
