New Delhi, April 10, 2026: The Indian National Congress (INC) has welcomed the recently announced ceasefire in West Asia, describing it as a crucial step toward de-escalation, renewed diplomacy, and long-term peace in the region.

In a resolution adopted by its Working Committee, the party strongly condemned targeted assassinations, wars conducted outside international law, and attacks on civilians and infrastructure, calling them “unconscionable crimes against humanity.” The Congress stressed that any sustainable resolution must be rooted in global legal frameworks, including the United Nations Charter and the Geneva Conventions, particularly principles respecting sovereignty and peaceful dispute resolution.

Reaffirming India’s long-standing foreign policy traditions, the party invoked the ideals of Mahatma Gandhi’s Ahimsa (non-violence) and Jawaharlal Nehru’s doctrine of non-alignment. It highlighted India’s historic role in supporting anti-colonial movements, peacekeeping operations, and diplomatic conflict resolution across regions such as Asia and Africa.

However, the Congress expressed concern over what it termed the weakening of India’s global standing in recent years. It stated that disruptions in energy security, strained ties with strategic neighbours, and reduced influence in the Global South have had tangible consequences for Indian citizens, including shortages of essential commodities and growing uncertainty for the diaspora in West Asia.

The resolution also criticised the approach of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government, alleging that the mixing of foreign policy with electoral considerations has undermined India’s diplomatic credibility. It specifically pointed to the recent visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the eve of the conflict, stating that it created perceptions of political endorsement of military escalation.

Further, the Congress warned that current policies risk allowing Pakistan to regain diplomatic space internationally, potentially impacting India’s strategic interests and enabling external actors to play a larger role in regional affairs.

Calling the current situation an “unprecedented polycrisis,” the party urged the government to prioritise national interest over political considerations, engage constructively with the Opposition, and adopt a unified national strategy. It emphasised the need to restore India’s role as a credible, principled, and proactive voice for peace and a just international order.

The resolution was released by the Foreign Affairs Department of the Congress.
