‘Incriminating’ material seized during search
Speaking to reporters outside Khera’s residence, Assam Police DCP Debojit Nath said that the Congress leader was not present at the time of the search. Electronic devices were seized, and some “incriminating material” was recovered, though the details cannot be disclosed at this stage. The case has been registered at the Crime Branch Police Station in Guwahati.

The whereabouts of Khera are currently unknown, but authorities said he will be traced.

CM Sarma alleges Pakistan link to Khera’s charges
On Monday (April 6, 2026), Sarma accused the Congress of running a “foreign-influenced misinformation campaign” against him and his wife Riniki Bhuyan Sarma ahead of the April 9 Assembly elections. He also claimed that the allegations against his wife, made by Khera on Sunday, have a Pakistan link.

According to Sarma, his wife had lodged an FIR with the Crime Branch of Assam Police against Khera and others. The complaint pertains to claims that she holds passports from three countries, including two Islamic nations, owns a luxury property in Dubai, and has investments worth millions in Wyoming, United States.

CM alleges Khera fled to Hyderabad
Sarma further alleged that Khera “ran away” to Hyderabad from Delhi after the Assam Police conducted the search. “He ran away from Guwahati yesterday. I have come to know through media that the police have gone to his residence in Delhi, but he has fled to Hyderabad. The law will take its course,” Sarma told ANI.

Congress terms it a ‘witch hunt’
Following the search, the Congress accused Sarma of using the state machinery to suppress dissent. Party general secretary Jairam Ramesh described the action against Khera as a “witch hunt” and criticized the deployment of a large police force to target a leader asking questions in public interest.

“This is not due process but a witch hunt—a bully using state machinery to silence the Opposition exposing his black deeds. Those who intimidate are the ones who are afraid and have much to hide,” Ramesh said on X. He added that this demonstrates the CM is “disturbed, desperate, and facing imminent defeat.” (Agency)
