An extensive cordon-and-search operation was launched by the Army on Wednesday morning in the dense forest belt along the Line of Control near Buchher Post in Kamalkote, Uri, after troops detected suspicious movement ahead of a forward defensive position.
Officials said personnel of 8 Rashtriya Rifles, operating under the 12 Infantry Brigade in the Uri sector, initiated the operation after troops at the Nanak Company Headquarters observed what appeared to be a possible Border Action Team attempt near the Forward Defence Line. The movement was detected in a rugged stretch of terrain overlooking the Buchher Post area, prompting immediate retaliatory fire to deter the suspected infiltrators.
Sources said the Army immediately declared the entire stretch a “no-movement zone” for civilians as additional troops were rushed in to reinforce the perimeter. The search operation was widened across adjoining forest corridors, which remain sensitive due to their closeness to known infiltration routes. Troops have been on heightened alert in recent weeks following intelligence inputs indicating that infiltrators may try to exploit changing weather conditions along the LoC.
Wednesday morning’s incident triggered a systematic area sweep, with teams checking potential ingress points, natural hideouts and old communication routes historically used during infiltration attempts.
The operation was still underway when last reports came in. No injuries or casualties were reported. Authorities said the situation in the Kamalkote sub-sector remains under strict surveillance as the Army continues to monitor the forward belt with enhanced night-vision devices and early-warning systems.
