Patna: Dr Ejaz Ali, a general surgeon in Patna, has continued to charge just ₹10 for a consultation, a fee he has maintained since beginning his medical practice in 1984. His approach to affordable healthcare has made him known among patients for keeping treatment accessible to people with limited financial means.

Based in Patna’s Bikhna Pahari area, Dr Ali reportedly sees more than 100 patients a day and performs around seven to eight surgeries. Patients also travel from different parts of Bihar to seek treatment at his facilities.

His hospital also charges comparatively low rates for several surgical procedures. According to the report, an appendix operation, including post-surgery medicines, costs around ₹17,000, while gallbladder stone removal is priced at approximately ₹11,000, including medicines. In some cases, fees are reportedly waived or patients are allowed to pay in instalments.

Dr Ali said his decision to keep fees low was influenced by the poverty he witnessed around him and guidance from his mother. He also tries to see patients on the same day so that those travelling from outside Patna do not have to spend additional money on accommodation, food and repeated travel.

His family has also continued the tradition of affordable healthcare. His late wife, who was a doctor, charged ₹10 for consultations, while their three children, who are also doctors, continue to provide medical services at comparatively modest fees.

Dr Ali has urged fellow doctors to consider the financial circumstances of patients before recommending treatment, tests or medicines. Alongside his medical work, he has also been involved in social causes focused on the welfare of underprivileged communities.
