New Delhi, September 30, 2026: The Election Commission has removed an additional Special Intensive Revision (SIR)-related declaration from Form 6, the statutory form used by new voters to register themselves, in states where the SIR exercise has been completed.
The move comes after Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi had raised objections to the change. According to The Indian Express, both had questioned whether the statutory Form 6 could be altered without amending the Registration of Electors Rules, 1960. Sandhu had described the changes as “unauthorised/illegal” and called for their removal.
The additional declaration had asked new applicants whether their own names, or those of their parents or grandparents, appeared in electoral rolls prepared during an earlier intensive revision. The requirement remains on the ECINET portal in states and Union Territories where the SIR process is still underway.
Following a September 26 meeting of the full Commission, the ECI said the declaration was intended specifically for the SIR period and that, outside the SIR process, the forms prescribed under the existing rules would be used.
