National Conference MP Syed Aga Ruhullah Mehdi has publicly criticised Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, accusing him of moving away from the commitments made to the people of Jammu and Kashmir before the Assembly elections.

Addressing reporters in Srinagar on Wednesday, Ruhullah said Omar Abdullah had earlier pledged to restore the political and constitutional rights that were taken away from Jammu and Kashmir in 2019. However, he alleged that the Chief Minister is now focused only on the restoration of statehood.

“He now speaks only about restoring statehood because he wants his power back, not the aspirations of the people or the promises he made before the Assembly elections,” Ruhullah said.

The Srinagar MP further argued that the restoration of statehood was already part of the Centre’s stated roadmap. He questioned why the National Conference had reduced its political demand to statehood instead of continuing to press for the wider commitments it had made to the people during the election campaign.

Ruhullah’s remarks highlight growing differences within the National Conference over the party’s political priorities and its approach to addressing the issues facing Jammu and Kashmir.(AGENICES)
