Day After Chatroo Protests, Kishtwar Police Crack Down on Bovine Smuggling; 44 Bovines Rescued

Jammu/Kishtwar, May 09; 2026: A day after protests led by Sanathan Dharam Sabha Kishtwar over an alleged sacrilegious incident reported from Simbol Chatroo, Jammu and Kashmir Police launched a major crackdown against bovine smuggling in Kishtwar district and rescued 44 bovines in separate operations while arresting four accused involved in the illegal activity.

According to police, in a major operation, a team led by PSI Basharat Hussain, Incharge Police Post Thakrie, under the supervision of DySP Headquarters Dr. Ishan Gupta-JKPS, was conducting patrol duty in the Sarawan area when it received reliable information regarding movement of bovine smugglers transporting cattle from Barina Nalla towards Zaitel Dhar.

Acting swiftly, the police team along with SOG personnel reached Upper Zaitel and intercepted two accused identified as Nazir Ahmed, son of Abdul Samad Hajam, resident of Bagla Bharat, Tehsil Dali Bagla, District Doda, and Raies Ahmed, son of Abdul Rashid Malik, resident of Bagla Bharat, Tehsil Dali Bagla, District Doda.

During checking, police rescued 36 bovine animals allegedly being transported illegally towards the Kashmir Valley via Kathkai Top without valid permission or transportation documents. Police said cognizance of the matter has been taken and investigation initiated.

In another incident, a naka was laid at Watsar Morh Chingam by a police team led by SHO PS Chatroo Inspector Rishi Kumar under the supervision of SDPO Dachhan Nitish Sharma-JKPS after receiving information about bovine smuggling. During checking, police intercepted suspicious movement and rescued four bovines.

In this connection, FIR No. 11/2026 under relevant sections of law was registered at PS Chatroo and one accused, identified as Akther Hussain, son of Kasim, resident of Nicha Rahal, was arrested.

In yet another incident, during routine patrolling in the jurisdiction of PS Chatroo, police rescued four more bovines. FIR No. 12/2026 was registered and one accused, Farheed Ahmad, son of Ghulam Mohammad, resident of Kalamsoi Singapore Chatroo, was arrested.

Senior Superintendent of Police Kishtwar, Shri Naresh Singh-JKPS, reiterated that District Police Kishtwar remains committed to curbing bovine smuggling and other unlawful activities. He appealed to the public not to indulge in any illegal acts that may disturb law and order and urged citizens to cooperate with police by sharing information regarding such activities.
