Torrential rains that lashed almost all parts of Jammu division on Tuesday disrupted life in low-lying areas due to waterlogging, while landslides in hilly regions affected road connectivity at several locations in Udhampur, Reasi, Kathua, as well as in Rajouri and Poonch districts of the Pir Panjal region.
The heavy rainfall also caused the water level of the Tawi River to rise, posing a risk to residents living on and along its banks, particularly in the Niki Tawi and Beli Charana areas.
As a precaution, the district administration has advised residents to move to safer locations.
“Water levels in the Tawi River are rising continuously, so people living along its banks have been asked to relocate to safer areas along with their livestock,” officials said.
Police personnel were seen alerting residents and making announcements to ensure they vacate vulnerable areas and move to secure locations.
In Reasi district, continuous rainfall has caused severe damage to the Reasi-Kheral-Gupt Kashi road. Locals reported that over 200 students were unable to attend school for the past two days due to the damaged road.
Following forecasts of heavy rains likely to trigger landslides and flash floods on August 12 in several districts of the Jammu region, including Reasi, the district administration had ordered schools in Reasi to remain closed on Tuesday.
According to Meteorological Department officials, Reasi recorded 280.5 mm of rainfall between 8:30 am on August 11 and 6:30 am on August 12, while Jammu and Samba districts recorded 96 mm each during the same period. Kathua district received 148 mm of rainfall.
On the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway, flooding briefly disrupted traffic at the Jagti stretch. (Agencies)
