“This Bill, passed by both Houses of Parliament, underscores our commitment to making India a hub for gaming, innovation, and creativity. It will promote e-sports and online social games, while protecting society from the harmful effects of online money games,” PM Modi said.

The Rajya Sabha passed the bill amid protests and sloganeering by opposition members. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw piloted the bill, which had earlier been passed by the Lok Sabha.

Vaishnaw explained that the bill covers three segments: E-sports, Online Social Gaming, and Online Money Gaming. While the first two segments will be promoted, Online Money Gaming is considered a public health risk and will be strictly regulated.

The Union Minister also noted that the bill follows a multi-year engagement with the gaming industry, reflecting over three years of consultations and planning.

The Monsoon Session 2025 of Parliament, which began on July 21, was adjourned sine die on Thursday. (Agencies)
