The West Indies ended a 34-year drought with a commanding 202-run series-clinching win over Pakistan in Trinidad on Tuesday, according to the ICC website.
Captain Shai Hope led from the front with an unbeaten 120, guiding his side to 294/6, before pacer Jayden Seales ripped through Pakistan’s batting lineup with career-best figures of 6/18. The visitors collapsed for just 92, handing the hosts a 2-1 series triumph — their first bilateral ODI series victory against Pakistan since November 1991.
The result provides a major boost for the Caribbean side as they aim to secure a place at the 2027 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, having failed to qualify for the 2023 edition in India.
At one stage, the West Indies were in trouble at 184/6 in the 42nd over when Gudakesh Motie fell for five. However, Hope and Justin Greaves (43*), with some late big hitting, lifted the total to a competitive score at the Brian Lara Stadium.
Hope’s 18th ODI century moved him past Desmond Haynes (17) into third place on the West Indies’ all-time list of ODI centurions, behind Chris Gayle (25) and Brian Lara (19).
Seales then tore into Pakistan’s top order, reducing them to 23/4, before returning at the death to wrap up the innings. His figures were the third-best by a West Indies bowler in men’s ODI cricket history and the victory was the team’s fourth-largest by runs.
“We had a complete game and I am extremely proud of us beating Pakistan after so long,” Hope said. “We stress on negatives a lot in the West Indies, but there are so many positives to shout about. It was great to see the guys pulling off history.”
Seales, who finished with 10 wickets across the three matches, was named Player of the Series. Hope hailed his young pacer: “Seales is a quality bowler… he’s a class act. Anything you ask him to do, he puts his hand up. He’s at his best across formats. (Agencies)
