Former All-Rounder Believes Dhoni’s Experience Can Strengthen the Batting Lineup
Shane Watson Calls for Dhoni’s Promotion in Batting Order After CSK’s Defeat to RCB
Former Australian all-rounder Shane Watson has questioned Chennai Super Kings’ (CSK) tactics, particularly MS Dhoni’s late entry in the batting order during their 50-run defeat against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). Watson expressed confusion over Dhoni batting at No. 9, despite his explosive finishing ability.
Watson Backs Dhoni for a Higher Batting Position
Dhoni walked in late, smashing 30 off 16 balls, but the match was already out of reach. Watson believes the CSK legend could have made a greater impact if sent up the order.
“This is exactly what CSK fans come to see—Dhoni smashing 30 off 16 deliveries. I would have absolutely loved to see him bat earlier. He should have come in before Ashwin,” Watson, a JioStar expert, stated.
He added that Dhoni has been in great form over the last few years and could have played longer if promoted up the order.
Questionable Batting Combinations at CSK
Apart from Dhoni’s late entry, Watson also criticized CSK’s batting strategy, particularly:
✔ Ruturaj Gaikwad batting at No. 3 instead of opening, which led to a four-ball duck.
✔ Rahul Tripathi opening instead of Gaikwad.
✔ Sam Curran batting at No. 5, a position Watson believes is unsuitable for him.
✔ Deepak Hooda struggling for form, playing in a defensive survival mode.
“CSK hasn’t got their combinations right. If they continue with this lineup, they risk being exposed,” Watson warned.
Dhoni’s Wicket-Keeping Still World-Class
Despite concerns over his batting position, Dhoni’s wicket-keeping skills remain unmatched, with both Watson and Aakash Chopra hailing his lightning-fast glovework.
“Even at 43, Dhoni’s keeping is as sharp as ever. The way he whips the bails off in an instant shows his game is in great shape,” Watson said.
Chopra called Dhoni’s stumping technique unparalleled, stating:
“The fastest hands in cricket belong to Dhoni. When we talk about speed, it’s now ‘fast, faster, MS Dhoni.’”
CSK’s Upcoming Match Against Rajasthan Royals
With one win and one loss so far, CSK will take on Rajasthan Royals in Guwahati on Sunday, hoping to bounce back and refine their batting combinations.
