Two Impersonators Arrested for Extortion in Tral
Awantipora, April 3 (GNS): In a swift operation, Tral Police have arrested two individuals who were posing as law enforcement officers to extort money from the public. The action was taken following a complaint filed by Mohd Altaf Ganai, son of Mohd Ramzan Ganai, a resident of Nageenpora, Tral.
The accused have been identified as Bashir Ahmad Sheikh, son of Mohd Jamal Sheikh, a resident of Saimooh, and Mohd Shafi Dar, son of Gh Nabi Dar, a resident of Dadsora. According to a police statement, the duo was falsely claiming to be police officials and extorting money from unsuspecting citizens under various pretexts.
Their illegal activities were exposed after multiple complaints surfaced from victims who had been coerced into paying money under the fear of legal repercussions. Acting on these complaints, Tral Police registered an FIR (No. 31 of 2025) under relevant legal provisions and arrested the accused.
Both individuals are currently in custody and face multiple charges. Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity. “Legitimate officers never demand money from the public under any circumstances,” the police statement emphasized.
Citizens have been advised to verify the identity of anyone claiming to be a police officer and report any suspicious behavior to the nearest police station or through the official helpline.
