US President Donald Trump has announced that he will meet Russian President Vladimir Putin next Friday, August 15, 2025, in Alaska. The meeting is expected to focus heavily on efforts to broker a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine.
Trump shared the details on his Truth Social account, writing, “The highly anticipated meeting between myself, as President of the United States of America, and President Vladimir Putin, of Russia, will take place next Friday, August 15, 2025, in the Great State of Alaska. Further details to follow. Thank you for your attention to this matter!”
Earlier, at the White House during the signing of the Armenia-Azerbaijan peace accord, Trump hinted at progress regarding the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
“I came in, and the whole world was on fire. We have only been here six months, but we have managed to put out nearly every fire. We are now working very hard on another one involving Russia and Ukraine. We will share more information soon,” Trump said.
He added that his “highest aspiration is to bring peace and stability to the world.”
When asked about the Russia-Ukraine peace efforts at the Armenia-Azerbaijan event, Trump said, “Russia has lost nearly 25,000 in the last month and a half, while Ukraine’s losses have been fewer, but many people are dying. We are getting very close to an agreement and will announce more details later. The meeting with Russia will take place at a very popular location for many reasons. We will reveal it in due course but not now due to the importance of what we just accomplished.”
On the progress of negotiations, Trump said, “We are getting very close to a deal. Working with European nations, who are excellent leaders, through NATO has been a pleasure. I have developed good relations with them and agreed to increase their defense spending from 2% to 5%, which they have already started paying. We are working closely together. To give credit to President Zelensky, he is receiving everything he needs, assuming we reach an agreement. I will be meeting President Putin soon. The meeting was delayed due to necessary security arrangements.”
Trump also mentioned that any deal to end the war in Ukraine would involve some territorial exchanges.
“It’s very complicated. But we will recover some territory and exchange some areas to benefit both sides. We will discuss this either later today or tomorrow,” he said. (Agencies)
