The Special Operations Group (SOG) is a specialized unit of the Jammu and Kashmir Police, formed in 1994 with an aim to train the Jammu & Kashmir Police personals for counterinsurgency and counterterrorism operations, often operating in challenging terrains. The SOG has been instrumental in various operations across the region.
The ongoing encounter underscores the ongoing security challenges in the region. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and have intensified efforts to ensure the safety of civilians and neutralize any threats.
The Kandi area in Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir, is a strategically significant region, particularly in the context of recent security operations bordering Pakistan.
Kandi is situated in the Budhal tehsil of Rajouri district & is approximately 30 km from Rajouri town, the district headquarters, and about 5 km from the sub-district headquarter Budhal.
Kandi is part of the Lower Shivalik range, characterized by hilly terrain and dense forests, which can pose challenges for both residents and security forces due to frequent infiltration of terrorists from Pakistan.
Kandi has been a focal point in counterterrorism efforts due to its proximity to the Pir Panjal range, a known infiltration route. Recent operations by the army & police have underscored its strategic importance.
