The Supreme Court on Friday, September 20, took suo motu cognizance of the video clips that showed Justice Vedavyasachar Srishananda, a judge of Karnataka High Court, making controversial comments during hearings. The clips, which recently surfaced on social media, show Justice Srishananda making objectionable remarks, including referring to a Bangalore area as “Pakistan” and inappropriate comments directed at a woman advocate.

A five-judge bench, led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and comprising Justices Sanjiv Khanna, BR Gavai, Surya Kant, and Hrishikesh Roy, passed an order seeking a report from the Karnataka High Court regarding the matter.

“In this age of social media, we are closely watched, and we have to act accordingly,” CJI Chandrachud remarked.
