The Supreme Court on Friday, September 20, took suo motu cognizance of the video clips that showed Justice Vedavyasachar Srishananda, a judge of Karnataka High Court, making controversial comments during hearings. The clips, which recently surfaced on social media, show Justice Srishananda making objectionable remarks, including referring to a Bangalore area as “Pakistan” and inappropriate comments directed at a woman advocate.
A five-judge bench, led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and comprising Justices Sanjiv Khanna, BR Gavai, Surya Kant, and Hrishikesh Roy, passed an order seeking a report from the Karnataka High Court regarding the matter.
“In this age of social media, we are closely watched, and we have to act accordingly,” CJI Chandrachud remarked.
During the hearing, CJI Chandrachud noted, “We may lay down some basic guidelines and seek a report from the secretary general of the High Court,” addressing Attorney General R. Venkataramani.
The Court directed the Registrar General of the Karnataka High Court to submit a report after consulting with the Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court. The matter is scheduled for further consideration on Monday.
