New Delhi, May 06: In a landmark move, the Supreme Court has made public the entire process of judicial appointments to the High Courts and Supreme Court, and has uploaded the details on its official website.
This decision, aimed at enhancing public knowledge and transparency, outlines the role of the High Court Collegium, the inputs from both state and central governments, and the deliberations by the Supreme Court Collegium.
The Supreme Court has also disclosed information about the candidates recommended for judicial appointments, including whether any of their family members have served as sitting or retired judges of the High Court or Supreme Court.
A statement issued by the Supreme Court read, “The Supreme Court of India has made available the complete process of appointments to the High Courts and Supreme Court on its website. This includes the roles of the High Court Collegium, the contributions of the State Governments and Government of India, and the Supreme Court Collegium’s consideration, for public knowledge and awareness.”
Additionally, the Supreme Court has uploaded the details of proposals approved by the Collegium for High Court judge appointments from November 9, 2022, to May 5, 2025. This includes candidates’ names, the respective High Court, the source of the recommendation (whether from Service or Bar), dates of recommendations, notifications from the Department of Justice, and appointments. It also includes information on special categories (SC/ST/OBC/Minority/Woman) and whether the candidates are related to any sitting or retired High Court or Supreme Court judge.
