Sub-zero cold hits Kashmir, Gulmarg temperature drops to –8.6°C

Cold weather continued across Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday, with most areas in the Kashmir Valley recording sub-zero minimum temperatures, officials said.

Gulmarg, a popular tourist destination in north Kashmir, was the coldest, with a minimum temperature of –8.6°C. Pahalgam recorded –6.8°C, while Shopian settled at –6.0°C.

Srinagar recorded a low of –4.0°C, and Srinagar Airport saw –4.8°C. Other parts of the Valley also experienced freezing night temperatures: Anantnag –5.6°C, Pulwama –5.4°C, Kupwara –3.1°C, Baramulla –4.0°C, and Bandipora –3.1°C.

Kokernag registered –2.0°C, Awantipora –2.4°C, Budgam –3.9°C, Pampore –3.0°C, and Kulgam was relatively warmer at –0.2°C. Zethan Rafiabad recorded –5.5°C. Data for Ganderbal and Sonamarg was not available, according to Kashmir Weather.

In the Jammu region, temperatures remained above freezing in most areas. Jammu city recorded 5.2°C, Jammu Airport 7.6°C, and Kathua was the warmest at 8.4°C. Banihal recorded 1.5°C, Batote 1.7°C, Ramban 2.7°C, and Doda 3.1°C. Rajouri hit the freezing point at 0.0°C, while Bhaderwah was the coldest at –2.2°C.

In Ladakh, Leh recorded a minimum of –11.2°C, officials said.

The Meteorological Department has forecast that cold conditions will continue, with chilly nights expected over the next few days.   (Agencies)
