Srinagar: SSP Rakesh Balwal, IPS, fondly known as the “Son of the Soil,” has been awarded the President’s Gallantry Medal for his exemplary leadership in a counter-terrorism operation in Srinagar. This prestigious recognition marks his third gallantry medal. Earlier, he was also honored with the Union Home Minister’s Medal for Excellence in Investigation for his outstanding role in probing the Pulwama attack case.
Currently serving in Manipur, SSP Balwal was posted there in October 2023 by the Government of India to help address the deteriorating law and order situation in the state. His commitment to public service and his ability to manage challenging situations have been widely lauded.
In addition to SSP Balwal, 15 other officers and personnel received the Gallantry Medal. Among the awardees are martyred DySP Himayun Bhat, ADGP Vijay Kumar, and SP Iftikhar Talib, whose contributions to counter-terrorism operations were also recognized.
The announcement of the awards was made on Republic Day, and a total of 78 officers and personnel from across the country were honored for their bravery and service. This acknowledgment serves as a testament to their dedication and unwavering resolve in safeguarding the nation.
