Gujarat chief minister Bhupendra Patel on Sunday said that his government will study the possibility of a system for making parental nod mandatory in love marriages if it is constitutionally feasible, PTI reported.
Patel made the comments at a Patidar community event to felicitate students at Nugar village in Mehsana district on Sunday. “While coming (to the venue), (state Health Minister) Rushikeshbhai Patel was telling me that we should take a re-look at the cases of elopement of girls and that a study should be carried out of all (the aspects)… so that something can be done to ensure that parental consent is there in it (love marriages),” the CM said.
A legislator of the opposition Congress said if the government introduces any such legislation in the assembly, then he will support it.
“At a time when parents are neglected in love marriages, the government is thinking of creating a specific system regarding love marriages that is constitutionally feasible,” MLA Imran Khedawala said.

In March, Gujarat BJP MLA Fatehsinh Chauhan linked love marriages to crimes and said making parental approval mandatory would reduce the crime rate in the state.
Chauhan had said if love marriages were registered with parental approval, the crime rate would come down by 50%.
During the same discussion in Gujarat assembly, Congress MLA Geni Thakore made a similar demand “to ensure that no boys who do not get girls for marriage or have criminal backgrounds lure girls and marry them”. She added that this leads to harassment of girls.Soon parental consent will be mandatory
