Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Friday accused the Election Commission of facilitating “vote theft” for the BJP, claiming his party possesses “open and shut” evidence to support the allegation.

The Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha described the purported evidence of electoral irregularities as an “atom bomb,” stating that once it is revealed, the Election Commission “will have no place to hide in the country.”

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Friday escalated his attack on the Election Commission (EC), alleging it is complicit in “vote chori” (vote theft) to benefit the BJP. He claimed that the Congress party now has “open and shut” proof of the EC’s involvement.

“I have said earlier that ‘vote chori’ is happening, and now we have definitive proof that the Election Commission is part of it,” Gandhi told reporters at the Parliament House complex. “I am not making a casual statement—this is backed by 100 per cent proof. Once we release it, the entire country will know that the EC is helping the BJP steal votes.”

Gandhi said the Congress had first suspected irregularities during the 2023 Madhya Pradesh Assembly elections, which then extended to the Lok Sabha elections and further into Maharashtra.

“We believe vote theft occurred in Maharashtra at the state level. During voter revision, crores of names were added. Since the EC wasn’t cooperating, we carried out our own investigation. It took six months, and what we’ve uncovered is like an atom bomb. When it explodes, the EC will have no place to hide,” he said.

He warned EC officials involved in the alleged irregularities—“from top to bottom”—that they would be held accountable.

“This is nothing short of treason. Even if you are retired or elsewhere, we will find you,” he said.

Gandhi’s remarks came shortly after he, along with other Opposition leaders, wrote to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla demanding a special discussion on the ongoing voter list revision in Bihar.

In their joint letter, the MPs raised alarm over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise taking place just months ahead of the Bihar Assembly elections, alleging it aims to disenfranchise voters. The opposition has been vocally protesting the move in both Houses of Parliament, calling for an urgent debate. (Media reports)
