PM Modi, President Murmu Pay Tribute to Kargil War Heroes on Kargil Vijay Diwas
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday extended heartfelt greetings on the occasion of Kargil Vijay Diwas, remembering the supreme sacrifices made by Indian soldiers during the 1999 Kargil War.
In a post on X, PM Modi said, “Heartfelt greetings to the countrymen on Kargil Vijay Diwas. This day reminds us of the unparalleled courage and valour of those brave sons of Mother India who laid down their lives to safeguard the nation’s honour. Their indomitable spirit and sacrifice will continue to inspire generations.”
President Droupadi Murmu also paid homage, saluting the grit and bravery of the soldiers. “On the occasion of Kargil Vijay Diwas, I pay my heartfelt tribute to the brave soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the motherland. This day symbolises the extraordinary valour, courage, and unwavering determination of our jawans. Their supreme sacrifice will forever remain a source of inspiration for all citizens,” she posted on X.
On the eve of Kargil Vijay Diwas, families of the fallen heroes gathered at Lamochen Viewpoint in Drass, paying emotional tributes to the martyrs of the war. The solemn event was filled with powerful recollections and expressions of pride.
Rajesh, whose brother lost his life at Tiger Hill, shared a deeply moving story. “My brother died fighting for the nation. When we wrote to him during the war, he told us he wasn’t part of the action—just to keep us from worrying. After his death, we read in his diary that he had anticipated he might not return. Before heading uphill, he gave his diary to a friend,” Rajesh said, his voice heavy with emotion.
Another family member, Surekha Shinde, proudly honoured her brother’s sacrifice. “My brother had served the army for five years before the Kargil conflict began. Coming to this place makes me feel proud. I’m grateful to the army for inviting us to be part of this remembrance,” she said.
The gathering served as a powerful reminder of the human cost of war and the extraordinary courage shown by India’s armed forces during the conflict.
Kargil Vijay Diwas, observed every year on July 26, marks the conclusion of Operation Vijay—India’s successful campaign to evict Pakistani intruders who had occupied strategic positions in the Kargil-Siachen sector during the winter of 1998-99.
The Kargil War, which lasted for over 60 days, is remembered not just for the bravery of Indian troops but also for the restraint shown by India in limiting the conflict’s scope, despite serious provocations. It remains a testament to India’s military prowess, political will, and strategic clarity.
The war was notable for its strategic and tactical surprises, and the coordinated response involving the Army, Air Force, and Navy.
The Indian Air Force’s role, under Operation Safed Sagar, was pivotal. Launched on May 26, 1999, it marked the first large-scale use of air power in Kashmir since 1971. Without crossing international borders, the IAF showcased how precision strikes and air dominance could shift the momentum of a ground conflict.
According to the IAF, the operation was a game-changer and proved that limited use of air assets in a localized conflict can decisively impact the outcome.
