Leader of Opposition in the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly, Sunil Sharma, stated on Monday that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will not remain silent in the wake of the deadly Pahalgam terror attack and will ensure a strong response. He emphasized that every word spoken in the special session of the House is being closely watched, as the entire nation is focused on Jammu and Kashmir’s reaction.
During his address, Sharma accused Pakistan of attempting to perpetuate its narrative in the region through miscreants, but he noted that the people of Jammu and Kashmir have come together after 35 years, sending a clear message to the world that no external efforts can divide them.
Expressing his condolences, Sharma said, “I am deeply pained by the loss of lives in Pahalgam. Jammu and Kashmir is known as heaven on earth, a place where people come to make memories, but this attack has shaken the very core of humanity.”
He added that the entire nation shares the shock, and the people of Jammu and Kashmir have unified in their condemnation of terrorism. However, he acknowledged the difficulty of answering the pain of those who lost loved ones, particularly the widow who lost her husband and the young boy who lost his father in the attack.
Sharma also pointed out that not just Jammu and Kashmir, but the entire nation is watching this session. “Every word spoken today is being scrutinized. We, as a people, chose to take to the streets after the attack, uniting in a way that sends a strong message of solidarity,” he said.
He emphasized the importance of preserving this unity, urging that no one should try to undermine it. Highlighting the strength of the central government, Sharma noted that the government has already taken some measures in response to the attack and expressed confidence that the Prime Minister would take decisive action.
Sharma further condemned Pakistan’s efforts to keep its narrative alive in Kashmir through supporting miscreants, citing the country’s defeats in three conventional wars since 1947. “Pakistan’s attempt to stir trouble in Kashmir through miscreants has been met with strong resistance from the people of Jammu and Kashmir,” he said.
In closing, Sharma proposed that legislators contribute to the victims of the attack by donating part of their salaries.
