PM Modi to Visit Thailand and Sri Lanka from April 3-6 to Strengthen Regional Ties
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will embark on a two-nation tour of Thailand and Sri Lanka from April 3-6, focusing on boosting regional cooperation under India’s newly announced ‘MAHASAGAR policy’ and reinforcing its Indo-Pacific vision.
The first leg of the tour will take Modi to Bangkok from April 3 to 4, where he will participate in the 6th BIMSTEC Summit, hosted by Thailand. The visit marks Modi’s third trip to Thailand, reflecting India’s commitment to regional diplomacy. Following this, he will travel to Sri Lanka on April 4 for a three-day visit, holding key discussions with the island nation’s leadership.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the visit will reaffirm India’s commitment to its ‘Neighbourhood First’ and ‘Act East’ policies, while also advancing its MAHASAGAR (Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Regions) vision. Modi first introduced the MAHASAGAR initiative during his recent visit to Mauritius as part of India’s engagement with the Global South.
BIMSTEC Summit in Thailand
At the Bangkok summit, Modi will join leaders from Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Nepal, and Bhutan to strengthen the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC). Discussions will focus on enhancing regional trade, security, connectivity, and climate cooperation, alongside measures for institutional strengthening within BIMSTEC.
During his stay in Thailand, Modi is also set to meet the Thai Prime Minister on April 3, where both leaders will review bilateral ties and explore future partnerships. India and Thailand share strong maritime and cultural ties, with deep-rooted historical, linguistic, and religious connections.
Three-Day Visit to Sri Lanka
Following his visit to Thailand, PM Modi will arrive in Sri Lanka on April 4 for a three-day state visit, during which he will hold high-level talks with Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
Both leaders will review progress on joint initiatives and bilateral cooperation, particularly in areas discussed during Dissanayake’s recent visit to India. Modi is also scheduled to meet senior Sri Lankan political leaders and dignitaries.
As part of his visit, Modi will travel to Anuradhapura, where he will inaugurate development projects funded by Indian financial assistance, further strengthening India-Sri Lanka ties.
This visit comes at a time of increasing diplomatic engagement between India and its neighbors, aligning with New Delhi’s strategic vision for a stable and prosperous Indo-Pacific region.
