Monsoon Session of Parliament Marred by Regular Disruptions

The monsoon session of Parliament witnessed repeated disruptions by opposition MPs. On Wednesday, proceedings were stalled after opposition leaders strongly objected to three bills tabled by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, which propose removing a prime minister, chief minister, or union minister from office if arrested or detained for 30 consecutive days in a serious criminal case.

During the debate, some opposition leaders even tore up copies of the bills—the Constitution (One Hundred and Thirtieth Amendment) Bill, 2025, the Government of Union Territories (Amendment) Bill, 2025, and the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2025—and threw the papers toward Amit Shah.

A verbal clash also erupted between Congress MP KC Venugopal and Shah, with Venugopal questioning Shah’s ‘morality’ in the Sohrabuddin case. Shah responded that he had resigned as Gujarat Home Minister before being jailed. He also stated that the three bills would be referred to a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC).

The Lok Sabha was adjourned sine die on Thursday, concluding the month-long monsoon session. Speaker Om Birla criticized the opposition for “planned disruptions,” noting, “Due to continuous deadlock and planned disruptions, we could barely work for 37 hours in this session.”

During the session, 14 government bills were introduced, of which 12 were passed. (Agencies)
