Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in the Maldives on Friday as part of the second leg of his two-nation tour. He was warmly welcomed by Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu upon arrival.
The two leaders shared a cordial hug, while senior Maldivian officials, including the Foreign Minister, Defence Minister, Finance Minister, and the Minister of Homeland Security, were present on the occasion.
The Maldivian capital, Malé, wore a festive look ahead of PM Modi’s visit. The city was adorned with large posters, colourful banners, and Indian flags fluttering along the streets. Banners reading “Warm Greetings to Prime Minister Narendra Modi” and posters featuring his image were displayed across the city. Several children were also seen holding paintings and portraits of PM Modi in anticipation of his arrival.
Prime Minister Modi was invited by President Muizzu to attend the Maldives’ 60th Independence Day celebrations as the Guest of Honour. This is PM Modi’s third visit to the island nation and the first by any foreign head of state or government during President Muizzu’s tenure.
Members of the Indian community in the Maldives expressed excitement over the Prime Minister’s visit. Speaking to ANI, a community member said, “We are proud to have such a strong leader. We appreciate Operation Sindoor, his swift actions, and the development taking place in India.”
During his two-day state visit, PM Modi will hold bilateral talks with President Muizzu to explore new avenues for cooperation across key sectors.
The visit also coincides with the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and the Maldives. Over the years, India has been a vital partner in Maldives’ development journey, extending support through infrastructure projects, aid, and emergency assistance.(Agencies)
