Speaker of J&K legislative assembly, Abdul Rahim Rather, on Tuesday admitted a private resolution by a Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) MLA seeking a one-time exemption for electricity tariff outstandings to consumers
The resolution submitted by the MLA will now move to the next stage and undergo the ballot procedure in the upcoming Assembly session.
As per Legislative Assembly rules, the resolution will be put to a vote through a ballot to decide whether it will be included in the assembly calendar for adoption or rejection.
Following the 2024 elections, the 90-member J&K Assembly composition is: NC 42, BJP 29, Congress 6, PDP 3, CPI(M) 1, Aam Aadmi Party 1, Peoples Conference 1, Awami Ittehad Party 1, and 6 independents. Congress has chosen to support the Omar Abdullah-led NC government from outside without formally joining it.
Two assembly seats—Nagrota in Jammu and Budgam in the Valley—are currently vacant.
Nagrota: Won in 2024 by BJP’s Devender Singh Rana, who passed away on October 31, 2024. BJP has nominated his daughter, Devyani Rana, for the by-election.
Budgam: Fell vacant after Omar Abdullah resigned to retain the Ganderbal seat, having won both in 2024. NC has nominated former minister Aga Syed Mehmood for Budgam and Shamim Begum for Nagrota.
The Election Commission has scheduled polling for both Nagrota and Budgam on November 11.
