On the directions of the Deputy Commissioner Doda and under the overall supervision of the Transport Commissioner, J&K, special enforcement drives were conducted across multiple locations in Doda and Kishtwar districts by the respective ARTO Offices.
Doda District: Strong Action on Roads
Led by ARTO Doda, Sh. Abrar Ahmed Kripak (JKAS), teams carried out checks at Malikpora, Batyas, Thathri, Phagsoo, Premnagar, Pull Doda, and Ganpat. During the operation, over 250 vehicles were inspected, resulting in 70 challans, 03 vehicles seized, and 01 driving licence suspended on the spot. The total fines collected amounted to ₹4,53,800.
ARTO Doda emphasized the department’s commitment to ensuring road safety, discipline, and strict adherence to traffic rules, reiterating that such drives will continue regularly.
Kishtwar District: Coordinated Enforcement
Following directions from Transport Commissioner J&K, Sh. Vishesh Paul Mahajan (JKAS), a joint enforcement drive was conducted by ARTO Kishtwar Tasleem Javed Wani in coordination with enforcement teams at Thathri and adjoining link roads.
During the drive, 76 vehicles were e-challaned, 07 vehicles were seized, and 02 driving licences were recommended for suspension, with fines totaling ₹2 lakh. ARTO Kishtwar stated that the enforcement action aims to send a strong message to traffic violators, ensuring public safety and reduction in traffic offences.
Rising Traffic Violations and Road Accidents in Chenab Valley
Both Doda and Kishtwar districts have recently witnessed a surge in traffic violations and a worrying rise in road accidents.
• Doda District: In 2023, the district reported 791 accidents, resulting in 170 fatalities and over 1,000 injuries. The Batote-Doda-Kishtwar road has emerged as a hotspot due to its challenging terrain and deteriorating infrastructure.
• Kishtwar District: In 2024, 102 accidents were recorded, leading to 34 deaths and 147 injuries. The district’s hilly terrain and inadequate road conditions have been major contributing factors.
Ongoing Efforts and Future Plans
Both ARTO Offices emphasized the need for continuous enforcement to curb traffic violations and enhance road safety. They also called for improved infrastructure, better road maintenance, and strict adherence to traffic norms to prevent further accidents and loss of lives in the Chenab Valley.
