The national capital woke up to heavy rain on Saturday, leading to widespread waterlogging, traffic jams, and flight delays, dampening the festive spirit of Raksha Bandhan. According to Flightradar data, at least 105 flights were delayed due to the bad weather.
Of these delays, 13 flights were inbound to Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) and 92 were outbound, disrupting travel plans across the city.
Though there were no widespread flight cancellations, airlines and airport authorities issued advisories urging passengers to prepare for possible delays caused by traffic congestion and rain.
IndiGo and SpiceJet both posted alerts on X, advising travelers to leave early for the airport and regularly check their flight status.
Meanwhile, Delhi Airport clarified that operations remained largely stable despite the weather.
“As per the Indian Meteorological Department’s forecast, Delhi is experiencing inclement weather conditions. However, all flight operations at Delhi Airport are currently normal. Our on-ground teams are working diligently with all stakeholders to ensure your journey remains hassle-free,” the airport posted on X.
Heavy rain lashed several key city areas, including Panchkuian Marg, Connaught Place, and Mathura Road, causing severe waterlogging and traffic gridlocks. Commuters faced long delays as underpasses and major roads were flooded.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a Red Alert for the entire Delhi region, forecasting moderate to heavy rainfall with intense thunderstorms, particularly over East and Central Delhi throughout the day.
While the rain brought temporary relief from heat and improved air quality, it disrupted daily life and holiday plans, with many residents sharing photos and videos of submerged streets and delayed commutes on social media. (Agencies)
