SRINAGAR, Mar 20: Omar Abdullah on Friday said that the Election Commission of India’s actions in poll-bound West Bengal will not influence the outcome of the Assembly elections, expressing confidence in a decisive win for Mamata Banerjee.
“No amount of effort by the Election Commission to gerrymander will change the results. On counting day, Mamata Didi will secure a thumping majority,” Abdullah said in a post on his X handle.
Reacting to the large-scale transfers ordered by the poll body, he remarked that such measures are usually seen in states where the BJP is not in power.
“These sweeping transfers are mostly seen in non-BJP ruled states, particularly in West Bengal, but that’s not surprising. However, the state will once again prove that elections are won by political leaders, not by officers,” he added.
Following the announcement of the poll schedule, the Election Commission ordered a series of reshuffles involving senior officials, including the transfer of Chief Secretary Nandini Chakravorty and Home Secretary Jagdish Prasad Meena, along with the removal of DGP Peeyush Pandey and Kolkata Police Commissioner Supratim Sarkar.
Polling for the West Bengal Assembly elections will be held in two phases on April 23 and April 29, while the counting of votes is scheduled for May 4. (Agency)
