Srinagar, July 22 : Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and National Conference (NC) Vice President Omar Abdullah has refuted Congress’s criticism over the recent protest for the restoration of statehood, stating that no prior consultation or coordination was made with his party.

Speaking to reporters during a visit to Safapora, Omar said, “We came to know about the protest only through newspapers. No one from the Congress or INDIA bloc reached out to us beforehand. If they had discussed it, we would have had no hesitation in supporting it.”

Omar reiterated that the National Conference has consistently backed the demand for the return of statehood. “NC was among the first to pass a resolution in the Cabinet and move it to the Assembly. Unfortunately, due to the prevailing political situation, it couldn’t be debated. Our stand on statehood remains unchanged.”

He also welcomed Congress’s renewed interest in the issue but stressed the need for better coordination. “It’s good that they have raised their voice, but support comes with dialogue. If they want our backing, they must first engage with us. We are always ready to contribute constructively,” he said.

During his Safapora visit, Omar met with the family of a woman who was recently murdered and assured them of all possible support. “A case has already been registered, and we are hopeful justice will be delivered,” he said. Omar also expressed concern over the condition of the woman’s elder son, who is battling a spinal injury. “They have requested government assistance, and we will ensure their appeal is seriously considered.”

On Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar’s resignation, Omar called it an unprecedented development. “This is the first time in India’s history that a sitting Vice President has resigned. It appears his health did not permit him to continue. I wish him a speedy recovery and hope his successor serves the post with dignity and fairness.”
