The state government of Uttar Pradesh has decided to construct a cricket stadium with training facilities and world class gymnasium in Mohammed Shami’s village. The decision of the Amroha district administration came after Shami’s stellar performance in the men’s ODI World Cup 2023.
Speaking about it, District Magistrate of Amroha, Rajesh Tyagi (IAS), said, “We have been sending a proposal to construct a mini stadium in the village of Mohammed Shami. In that proposal, there will also be an open gymnasium. We have sufficient land there (in the village of Shami).” He further said, “The (Uttar Pradesh) government passed instructions to construct 20 stadiums across the state and district Amroha’s stadium was also selected for it.”
Shami has been in sensational form in the ICC World Cup 2023. He has taken 23 wickets in just 6 matches.
In the semi-final against New Zealand, he took 7 wickets and was named the Player of the Match. He dismissed Devon Conway, Rachin Ravindra, Kane Williamson, Tom Latham,.Daryl Mitchell, Tim Southee and Lockie Ferguson.
His stunning match-winning spells have helped India set up a mouthwatering clash with five-time champions Australia in Sunday’s final at Ahmedabad.
The state government, the report says, wants to celebrate the performance of Shami, the highest wicket-taker in the World Cup.
The new stadium will help produce more young cricketers in the region.
It was due to lack of proper facilities in Amroha that Shami went to Kolkata for better opportunities in 2005.
Shami impressed the Kolkata coaches with his performances in club matches before he earned a place in the Bengal state team. The right-arm pacer eventually made India debut in 2013 and soon established himself in the playing eleven.
With 447 wickets in international cricket across formats, Shami is among the world’s elite fast bowlers. He is also the sixth highest wicket-taker in the history of ODI World Cups, with 54 wickets from just 17 matches.
