A 16-year-old boy died by suicide in Maharashtra’s Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar on Sunday after his mother allegedly refused to buy him a mobile phone.
The boy, identified as Atharva Gopal Tayde, had reportedly been asking his mother for a phone for several days. However, she repeatedly turned down his request.
According to officials, Atharva was preparing for the police recruitment examination.
On Sunday, after yet another refusal, he went to a hill in Tisgaon and jumped. Locals spotted him and rushed him to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead.
This is not the first such case in Maharashtra. Last year, a 15-year-old boy, Vishwajeet Ramesh Chamdanwale, died by suicide at his home after his mother refused to buy him a phone for his birthday. The incident occurred while his mother and sister were asleep.
In another case reported in July last year, an 18-year-old boy in Navi Mumbai took his own life after his father denied him an expensive iPhone. According to the family, the boy had asked for an iPhone worth around ₹1.5 lakh, but his father bought him a budget Vivo phone instead, which reportedly led to his depression and death.
