New Delhi, Feb 06: Proceedings of the Lok Sabha were adjourned till 12 noon on Friday following noisy protests by Opposition members over various issues.
As soon as the House assembled for the day, several Opposition MPs entered the Well, raising slogans and displaying placards. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla urged members to maintain order, saying that people had elected them to raise issues through discussion and not by shouting slogans.
He said the disruptions amounted to disrespect of the House and noted that during the current session, 19 hours and 13 minutes had been lost due to repeated interruptions.
Appealing to the protesting members to allow the House to function, Birla also pointed out that a question by Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi was listed for the day.
However, as the uproar continued, the Speaker adjourned the proceedings within four minutes of convening till 12 noon.
The government and the Opposition remain at loggerheads over multiple issues. In an unprecedented development, the Lok Sabha on Thursday passed the Motion of Thanks without the Prime Minister’s customary reply, which had been scheduled a day earlier but could not take place due to sustained disruptions by Opposition members.
