The Ladakh Police, which is investigating the recent unrest in the Union Territory, is also looking into activist Sonam Wangchuk’s alleged links with Pakistan and his visits to neighbouring countries.
Director General of Police (DGP) Ladakh, S.D. Singh Jamwal, said that the Leh police had recently arrested a Pakistan PIO who was allegedly in contact with Wangchuk.
“We arrested a Pakistan PIO in the recent past who was reporting back. We have a record of this. Wangchuk had attended a Dawn event in Pakistan and also visited Bangladesh. So, there is a big question mark on him. The investigation is ongoing,” Jamwal said during a press conference in Leh on Saturday.
Wangchuk, who has been leading the campaign for Ladakh statehood, was detained under the National Security Act (NSA) on Friday. The government alleged that his provocative speeches triggered the violence on Wednesday, which left four people dead and many others injured.
He has been lodged in Jodhpur Central Jail in Rajasthan.
The DGP also accused Wangchuk of instigating unrest in the Union Territory. “Sonam Wangchuk has a history of instigating. He has referred to the Arab Spring, Nepal, and Bangladesh,” he said, adding that an investigation is ongoing into his alleged violations of the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act.
The Union Home Ministry has cancelled the FCRA licence of the Students’ Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh (SECMOL), an organisation founded by Wangchuk, citing alleged financial discrepancies and fund transfers considered against the “national interest.”
Meanwhile, an uneasy calm continued to prevail in the Himalayan region, with curfew in force for the fourth consecutive day in Leh and no untoward incidents reported across the Union Territory. (Agencies)
