In a shocking incident, a 24-year-old man who was undergoing treatment for food poisoning after eating shawarma, died on Wednesday in Kochi, Kerala. The restaurant from where he ordered the meal was reportedly shut down by authorities.
On October 18, Kottayam-native Rahul Nair ordered a shawarma meal from Le Hayath restaurant. He fell seriously ill after eating the food and was admitted to Sunrise Hospital in Kakkanad on October 19. After receiving treatment, Nair was discharged from the hospital the same day but was admitted to hospital on October 22 because of weakness, OnManorama reported.
Nair’s condition worsened and he passed away on Wednesday, according to the hospital. “It is clear there has been poisoning. However, we will have to wait for the test results to ensure whether it was caused by the shawarma. Rahul’s kidney and liver had become damaged and he suffered a heart attack,” the hospital said in a bulletin, according to OnManorama.
Restaurant shut down
Following the family’s complaint about the food poisoning, the health department of Thrikkakara municipality had ordered the closure of the restaurant on October 22. While the cause of Nair’s death is still being investigated, the hospital is awaiting the results of postmortem and blood samples sent for further analysis.
Throughout his stay at the hospital, Nair was kept on ventilator support as his health condition deteriorated.
The Thrikkakara police registered a case against the restaurant owner. Test results from samples taken at the restaurant are pending.
