JAMMU, Sept 19: Authorities have suspended three police officers, including a Station House Officer (SHO), over alleged lapses in handling the case of a Mumbai woman’s killing and injuries to two others in Sainik Colony last month.

Police sources identified the suspended officers as SHO Channi Himmat, Inspector Deepak Pathania, Incharge Police Post Sainik Colony, PSI Waseem Bhatti, and PSI Rohit Sharma. The action followed revelations that the 30-year-old victim, Mehjabeen Akil Sheikh of West Malad, Mumbai, died from a firearm injury rather than a road accident, as initially reported.

On August 21, Mehjabeen, her sister Fatima Akil (21), and Jaspreet Kour (28) of Ludhiana were brought to JK Medicity Hospital by two men, Naveen Bakshi and Surinder Pal, who claimed the women had been injured in a road accident on the Ring Road. The duo, who run a physiotherapy centre in Sainik Colony, were reportedly involved in irregular practices under the supervision of the suspended officers.

Against medical advice, the women were later shifted to ASCOMS Batra Hospital and then to GMC Jammu, where Mehjabeen succumbed to her injuries on August 30.

Initially, the police opened inquest proceedings under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNSS) based on the statements of Bakshi and Pal. However, further investigation revealed that Mehjabeen had suffered a gunshot wound, prompting the registration of a murder case. FIR 152/2025 was filed under Sections 103(1), 109, 332(b) of BNSS and Sections 3/25 of the Arms Act at Police Station Channi Himmat against unknown individuals.

Senior officials cited delays and the local police’s failure to promptly determine the use of a firearm as reasons for the suspension of the three officers.

Police clarified the sequence of events, noting that an investigating officer was deputed on August 21, but the injured women were initially unfit to provide statements. Following Mehjabeen’s death on August 30, her mother requested a post-mortem exemption through the District Magistrate, which the SHO denied due to contradictions in her statement. The post-mortem was conducted on August 31, with the process fully documented, and the body handed to the family after completion of legal formalities.

Investigators collected CCTV footage, mobile call records, and internet protocol detail records (IPDRs) of the deceased, the injured, and their associates. Evidence suggested Mehjabeen was fatally shot, leading to the inquest being converted into an FIR on September 18. A team of forensic experts, crime photographers, and magistrates visited the scene to collect material evidence.

Authorities confirmed that a professional approach was being maintained to investigate whether a larger nexus was involved, while the identity of the gunman remains unknown. The investigation is ongoing, and efforts are underway to trace and apprehend the culprit. ( Excelsior)
