The man who slapped a co-passenger on an IndiGo flight from Mumbai to Kolkata on Friday has been barred from flying with the airline.
The accused allegedly assaulted a fellow passenger from Assam’s Cachar district, who was reportedly experiencing a panic attack during the flight.
A day after the incident sparked public outrage, IndiGo issued a statement announcing the suspension of the accused passenger from flying with the airline.
“In line with our commitment to discourage unruly behavior onboard, the individual has been suspended from flying on any IndiGo flights, as per regulatory provisions,” the airline said in its statement.
The airline stated that it prioritizes the safety of both its crew and passengers, and remains “committed to fostering a safe, respectful, and comfortable environment for all onboard.”
The incident involved an unprovoked assault, where one passenger slapped another. The victim has been identified as Hossain Ahmed Mazumdar.
A video of the incident went viral, showing an anxious Mazumdar being escorted to his seat by flight attendants when the accused suddenly slapped him.
In a shocking twist, Mazumdar has since been reported missing. According to a Times of India report, he was supposed to travel from Kolkata to Silchar after the flight but never reached his destination.
“When we didn’t find him on the Silchar flight, we contacted local authorities and even approached the Udharband police station near Silchar airport,” one of his relatives reportedly said.
His family, who had been waiting for him at the airport, have urged authorities to trace his whereabouts and release CCTV footage that might help locate him. (Sources)
