Randhawa, a native of India and a student at Mohawk College, was waiting at a bus stop on Upper James Street near South Bend Road around 7:30 p.m. when gunfire erupted. One of the bullets hit her in the chest, and she later succumbed to her injuries at the hospital. Hamilton police described her as an “innocent bystander.”

Acting Detective Sergeant Daryl Reid said the shooting appeared to stem from a confrontation between occupants of a black Mercedes SUV and a white sedan. Shots were reportedly fired from inside the Mercedes before both vehicles fled the scene. Authorities confirmed that both vehicles had at least two occupants but did not provide suspect details. A homicide investigation is underway.

Randhawa had moved to Canada less than two years ago to pursue studies in occupational therapy and physiotherapy. Family members described her as a quiet, hardworking individual who had a promising future.

The Indian Consulate in Toronto expressed deep sorrow and stated that it is in close contact with Randhawa’s family, offering all necessary assistance. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved family during this difficult time,” the consulate said.

Hamilton Police Chief Frank Bergen condemned the act as a senseless display of violence, calling the perpetrators “thugs” and vowing to use every resource available to bring them to justice. “This is a stark reminder of the devastating impact of gun violence in our city,” he said.

Hamilton Mayor Andrea Horwath and Ontario political leaders also expressed condolences. “Her death is devastating for our entire community,” said Horwath, while Marit Stiles, Leader of the Official Opposition, said Randhawa “should still be here.”

Mohawk College issued a statement expressing deep grief and pledged support to Randhawa’s friends and the college community.

Authorities continue to review surveillance footage and are appealing to the public for any information that may help in identifying the suspects.
