An Indian tech reviewer has shared his experience of alleged racial discrimination at a five-star resort in Mauritius, claiming that staff appeared to prioritise European guests while overlooking him and his family.
The man, who posts under the handle @Starcommander10 on X, said the incident took place some time ago, though he did not specify the exact date.
“Worst experience in Mauritius”
In his post, he explained that he had recently secured a new job and decided to take his parents on a celebratory trip to Mauritius, booking a stay at a luxury beachfront property. The holiday package reportedly cost him around ₹3.5 lakh.
However, he said the experience turned out to be deeply disappointing. “As an Indian I have faced many instances of racism, but the worst experience was in Mauritius,” he wrote.
What happened at the resort
According to the reviewer, the family arrived during the Easter weekend. Around 1 pm, he contacted the reception desk to reserve a table for lunch and was told there would be a 15-minute wait due to limited availability.
When they reached the restaurant area, he claimed there were no visible tables available. Confused and hungry, the family approached a staff member for clarification. The staffer allegedly asked whether they were staying at the property and then walked away without offering further assistance.
“Begging after paying ₹3.5 lakh”
Despite sensing something was amiss, the reviewer said he tried not to let the situation affect their holiday. Shortly afterward, a European guest reportedly informed him that the resort was hosting a special Easter lunch for guests.
He claimed that his family had not been informed about the event and continued waiting without guidance. “We waited and waited. It was now 2:30 pm. My mom then went to an elderly housekeeping staff member and literally begged if we could have lunch somewhere,” he wrote. “For the first time, I felt terrible. Imagine begging after paying ₹3.5 lakh.”
According to him, the housekeeping staff member eventually guided them to the Easter lunch venue, where food and seating were available.
“Stunned by racism”
The reviewer said they ate from the buffet but were disheartened by what followed. When he asked for a refill of French fries, he was allegedly told they were finished and offered potato wedges instead. However, he claimed that when a “white-skinned boy” requested fries shortly afterward, they were replenished.
“I was stunned by the racism,” he wrote, adding that he raised the issue with the hotel manager but did not receive a formal apology—only an assurance that his feedback had been noted.
He concluded by saying that despite paying the same amount as other guests, he felt treated unfairly. He also explained that he did not speak publicly about the incident earlier because he was concerned about his safety at the time.
