How low will we fall? School bars rape-survivor from board exams as it will ‘spoil atmosphere’

In a distressing incident from Ajmer, Rajasthan, a Class 12 student has come forward with allegations of being denied the opportunity to participate in her board examination due to a gang rape she endured last year. According to the student, her school took this action under the pretext that her presence would “spoil the atmosphere” of the institution, as reported by a Child Welfare Committee (CWC) official.

The issue was brought to light after the victim reached out to the Child Welfare Committee, detailing her ordeal in a complaint. Anjali Sharma, the Chairperson of the CWC, relayed that despite the victim’s previous attendance at board exams four months ago, the school failed to provide her with an admit card for the examination. Furthermore, the school communicated to the victim that her name had been removed from the list of students eligible to sit for the exams.

In response to the victim’s plea, Sharma has taken action by contacting the District Education Officer, urging the imposition of strict measures against the school to prevent any disruption to the student’s academic progress. Sharma disclosed, “The victim was prepared for her board examination in December last year. However, she was barred from the examination as the school withheld her admit card, justifying their decision by claiming her attendance would detrimentally affect the school’s environment.”

The CWC has also reached out to the District Collector and is coordinating with the District Legal Services Authority to ensure the survivor receives the necessary legal assistance.

Despite the board examination period having concluded, the Child Welfare Committee is actively working to secure an opportunity for the survivor to partake in the board’s supplementary examination, aiming to safeguard her educational future amidst this grave injustice.
