Srinagar, Mar 28 : In a significant step toward public welfare, the Jammu and Kashmir government announced on Saturday that a comprehensive Drug De-addiction Bill is ready and will be introduced during the ongoing Budget Session. The move highlights the administration’s focus on combating substance abuse through a strong legislative framework.

Health & Medical Education Minister, Sakina Masood Ittoo, responding to legislators’ queries, confirmed that the government is making concerted efforts to table the bill in the current session. The initiative is seen as a proactive measure to institutionalize the fight against drug abuse, a key priority for the administration.

Outlining the government’s multi-pronged strategy, Minister Ittoo said that while the police are tasked with controlling the spread of narcotics, the Health Department will focus on treatment and rehabilitation of affected individuals. She emphasized the need for coordinated action and urged the Home Department to intensify its efforts against the drug trade to complement health initiatives.

Minister Ittoo also noted varying trends in substance abuse across different regions and stressed the importance of protecting citizens from exploitation. She issued a strict directive that private de-addiction centers must not overcharge patients, inviting legislators to report any violations for prompt government action.
